About The Flag Shop and IYC / À propos du Flag Shop et de l'AIC

Founded in 1975 in Vancouver, The Flag Shop was the first specialty flag shop of its kind in Canada. Today, The Flag Shop's main specialty is printing soft signage including flags, banners, and other custom products as well as making promotional items. Started by Doreen Braverman, The Flag Shop remains a family business and is currently owned and operated by her daughter, Susan Braverman. Susan got involved with the International Year of Co-operatives thanks to The Flag Shop's role in a local Vancouver sewing co-operative called Common Thread which provides job skills to individuals who thrive in a more flexible work environment. The Flag Shop allocates a portion of its production facilities to Common Thread at no charge, and encourages their customers to take advantage of the “Banners to Bags” program that has Common Thread “repurpose” street banners into bags, once the banners are no longer needed. Fondé en 1975 à Vancouver, le Flag Shop fut le premier commerce en son genre au Canada spécialisé en drapeaux. À l'heure actuelle, la principale spécialité du Flag Shop est l'impression d'enseignes souples telles que drapeaux, bannières ou autres articles personnalisés, de même que la production d'autres types de matériel promotionnel. À titre d'entreprise familiale, le Flag Shop est passé des mains de sa fondatrice, Doreen Braverman, à ceux de sa fille, Susan Braverman, qui en assume dorénavant la propriété et la gestion. Celle-ci s'est retrouvée impliquée dans l'Année internationale des coopératives grâce au rôle tenu par le Flag Shop auprès de la coopérative de couture Common Thread de Vancouver, entreprise qui offre la possibilité d'acquérir des compétences professionnelles à des individus aspirant à un milieu de travail plus souple. Le Flag Shop alloue une partie de ses installations de production gratuitement à Common Thread tout en encourageant ses clients à profiter du programme "De bannières à sacs", qui voit cette entreprise transformer après usage d'anciennes bannières de rue en sac.
